[FC.USC] USC Free Culture SPEED Remix Competition!

October 20th, 2006 by cameronparkins Competitions, Creative Commons, Remix

ATTENTION all filmmakers, content creators, and general imaginationers! Do you like scary movies? Do you dig Halloween? Do you want to win the respect of your peers? Are you super into free stuff? Then check this - Free Culture USC is hosting a remix competition where you get your hands dirty remixing George Romero’s Night of the Living Dead into a 5 minute short in any style of your liking. The winner (or winning team) will receive a Neuros OSD open-source media player. Oh man, too cool!

We will be holding a screening/pizza party for all the shorts on Sunday, October 29th. This is where your short will first be screened - after the screening we will post them on our website for the world to see and vote upon! The winner will be announced the following Sunday (Nov. 5th) at the ‘Remixing the Archive’ Visions and Voices event at the Institute for Multimedia Literacy, where hundreds of people will have the opportunity to see your work.

Here are the details/rules:

1. Only Public Domain or Creative Commons licensed material allowed! Yes, this means you can’t set a zombie attack to the soundtrack of your favorite current New Wave Revivalist Band, but you just have to be creative! There is tons of free stuff over at www.creativecommons.org that you can snag up for free, including music and extra clips. And of course the film - which you can grab here - is in the public domain already. Brilliant!

2. Your derivative works will also be set up with a Creative Commons license. Don’t be scared, this stuff is really easy! The license we recommend is the “Attribution Non-commercial Share Alike License” - it means that others will be able to remix, share, and distribute your work but they can’t do so for commercial purposes or without giving you the credit you deserve. For a quick primer on what Creative Commons is all about, check this out.

3. To enter the contest, just bring a copy of your short to the Sunday Screening on October 29th, 2006. A DVD will work great, but also make sure that there is a copy that we can then compress to upload to the web. It is your call on how you want to do this. Our recommendation is two separate copies - a full resolution DV quality Quicktime for the main screening as well as a 320×240 Quicktime with H264 compression that we can put on the web.

4. If you can’t make it physically to the Sunday screening but still want to enter, no problem! Just contact us at freecultureusc@gmail.com and we will arrange a drop-off/pick-up session.

5. Voting is fairly straight forward - one person, one vote. Voting will take place through out the week of Oct. 30th - Nov. 4th and again, the winner will be announced on Sunday, Nov. 5th at Remixing the Archive.

That is really it. Have fun with this! Other than the rules about copyright licenses there are no rules! It is going to be a blast and we are looking forward to hanging out and seeing what everyone has got! If you have any questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to e-mail us at freecultureusc@gmail.com.
